A young marginal indicted and imprisoned

A young homeless man was indicted on Monday in Montpellier for the murder of a septuagenarian found dead on Saturday in the parking lot of his residence. The victim, aged 72 and living in the Aiguelongue district, presented at the time of the discovery of his body “several wounds in the throat, probably made by a knife”, recalls this Monday Fabrice Bélargent, the prosecutor of the Republic of Montpellier, in a press release. She lived alone, was placed under curatorship, suffered from “psychological fragilities” and “was notably known to wander around the residence at any time of the day or night”, specifies the magistrate.

At the same time, the police from the Montpellier police station arrested a man in his twenties overnight from Saturday to Sunday “who was walking on the public highway and was carrying a knife”.

A testimony, images but no confessions

Several elements allowed the investigators to make the link with the homicide probably perpetrated a few hours earlier. First, the “testimony of a person who recognized the individual arrested (…) for having met him in the parking lot of the residence where the body was discovered, on May 27 at 1:30 a.m.”, according to the prosecutor . Then, the exploitation of video surveillance images which made it possible to confirm the presence of the suspect in the Aiguelongue district on the night of May 26 to 27.

Finally, Fabrice Bélargent points out that traces of blood, still being analyzed, were “discovered on the clothing worn by the person concerned”. The latter, unknown to the police, presents “obvious behavioral problems” but “disputed any involvement in the facts”.

The identity of the suspect remains to be determined

“At this stage of the investigation, the identity of the person concerned has not been established. He communicated an erroneous marital status and refused to speak about his past. He indicated that he was born and had always lived in Montpellier, specifying that he had been homeless for a few days, ”adds the prosecution.

Indicted for intentional homicide, the young suspect was remanded in custody.
