Currently being created to the east of the city of Nantes, the new Doulon-Gohards district will receive its first school at the start of the school year in September 2023. This will eventually house six kindergarten classes and ten elementary classes. But it still lacks a name. An initial consultation, carried out with pupils from neighboring schools, made it possible to retain three of them: the explorer and botanist Jeanne Barret (1740-1807), the oceanographer Anita Conti (1899-1997), and the designer of comics Claire Bretécher (1940 – 2020).
And rather than asking elected officials to decide, the town hall of Nantes has decided to open online voting to the general public (whether you are from Nantes or not). In recent months, the new Nantes schools Alice Guy (former Mellinet barracks) and Germaine Tillion (Champ de Manoeuvre) had already been baptized by means of residents’ votes. The personalities suggested are only women in order to amplify the process of feminization of street and place names, launched in 2016 by the city of Nantes.
