Jürgen Rose, the legendary stage magician, is now the latest addition to the Bavarian State Opera’s illustrious gallery of ancestors.
The respect for Edita Gruberova is endless. The many steps, the sloping, azure-blue floorboards leading to the orchestra pit. The queen of bel canto was the first person Jürgen Rose sent out singing, into this unstable, slanted performance space. That was in 2006, when Rose delivered a total work of art with Bellini’s “Norma” at the Bavarian State Opera, directing as well as the stage design, costumes, lighting. Back then, there were a few boos from the premiere audience when he bowed.
