A number of candidates slightly higher than last year

The number of candidates for the teacher competitions, whose registrations closed on Friday, will be slightly higher than last year, said the Minister of National Education. Faced with the lack of candidates, the ministry extended enrollment in the first and second degrees by two weeks. “We don’t have the figures yet but we will be slightly above last year without that being enough,” said Pap Ndiaye, interviewed on Radio J.

The teacher competitions are far from full. At the end of those of last July, more than 4,000 posts were not filled, leading the Ministry of Education to resort to an increased number of contract workers, sometimes less trained than the holders. “We are not going to change things with a magic wand, it will take time,” conceded the Minister of Education. “It is clear that the start of the 2023 school year will not be dramatically different from the 2022 school year,” he added.

“A long-term effort”

“It is a long-term effort that we are making to upgrade, firstly through salaries but not only,” said Pap Ndiaye. This revaluation is the subject of a consultation initiated in October. In addition to remuneration or the conditions of exercise of the profession, the methods of training and recruitment of teachers are among the avenues in which the minister is interested.
