  • The NAHB is a women’s handball club playing in the elite of the French championship.
  • The club announced on Tuesday that it was renaming itself Neptunes de Nantes.
  • He also hopes to build his own women’s hand room within a few years.

The 2020-2021 women’s handball season has just ended with a rather flattering record for the Nantes Atlantique Handball : 5th place in the championship, finalist in the Coupe de France and, above all, winner of the European League (European Cup below the Champions League). But the Nantes club, owned by
real estate group Realities since the end of 2020, aims higher. Like playing the Champions League in “three or four years”. And this ambition goes first through a new name, unveiled this Tuesday noon. So the NAHB is over, welcome to the Neptunes de Nantes, a reference to the city’s motto (“Neptune favors those who dare”).

“We wanted the name of the club to represent more of something on the territory. It is a new identity which highlights the woman, the performance. It will help the club and therefore help the players, ”explains Yoann Choin-Joubert, boss of Réalités and president of the Neptunes. “We want to create a real brand with one very strong name”, adds Marian Buron, communications manager, who does not hide an “American inspiration”.

A new name, a new logo, but also a new website, pending a new jersey (pink and blue) this summer and the creation of an online store. To accompany this “new very important step in the history of the club”, the budget will be increased from 1.8 to 2.2 million euros. “The medium-term ambition is to find an economic model allowing to detoxify oneself from public aid and from the new shareholder”, explains Yoann Joubert.

A new hall with 3,000 seats in 2024?

This financial independence could be facilitated by the existence of a “room dedicated” to the Neptunes. The club wants to build in the Nantes metropolis, with private funds, new equipment of around 3,000 places. “I would like us to be able to inaugurate a temple of women’s sport in Nantes,” explains Yoan Joubert. A warm, secure place, where the public would be close to the players, with a much better VIP experience. With also everything that goes around the performance bubble: health, accommodation, etc. ”

The building permit filing is planned “within 6 to 12 months” for delivery in 2024, the year of the Paris Olympics “It’s very tight but it is possible. It is the quality of cooperation with local authorities that will make the difference. We have the ambition and the means to do so. It is an important investment but it will be an asset that will consolidate the club. “In the meantime, the Neptunes will start this summer, at their expense (250,000 euros), modernization work in their current Mangin-Beaulieu room, property of the city of Nantes
