A new credit card scam is taking its toll

It’s a new scam in vogue in Perpignan and its agglomeration, to the point that the national gendarmerie posted an alert on social media. For several days, retirees have been victims of the same scheme. They are docked in the parking lot of a supermarket after shopping.

A fake supermarket employee, often a woman so as not to arouse suspicion, calls out to them to explain that they have paid too much and that the supermarket must reimburse them for the overpayment. The person then invites them to entrust them with their credit card and secret code in order to proceed with the operation.

Victims throughout the department

Except, of course, the employee is a crook who hastens to empty the account of his victims before they discover the deception. Several people were victims of these thefts by trickery in Rivesaltes and Pollestres in particular. “This phenomenon affects all areas, whether in the large or small towns of our department”, specifies the national gendarmerie of the Pyrénées-Orientales. Which reminds never to entrust a credit card to a stranger, and even less to provide him with the code (to anyone, not even his banker).
