A man found dead on the roof of a TER in flames

The firefighters made a very macabre discovery when they intervened at Menton-Garavan station (Alpes-Maritimes) this Monday evening. The body of a man in his thirties was found charred on the roof of a train where a fire had broken out.

The TER was to connect Ventimiglia, Italy, to Nice. On arriving on site, the rescuers “discovered the beginnings of a fire at the level of the train’s pantograph, [qui établit le contact électrique avec la caténaire]following the presence of [cette] person, ”said the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis) of the Alpes-Maritimes.

A migrant died in 2018 and another injured in 2021

The alert was given around 6:10 p.m., also indicated Sdis 06. Rail traffic was immediately cut off in both directions during the emergency response and was able to gradually resume around 8 p.m.

The identity of the victim has not been revealed. In January 2018, the body of a migrant was found burned on a TER circulating in Menton. In November 2021, a 19-year-old young man from Guinea had already been electrified by climbing on the roof of a train, no doubt “to escape control” from the police, had then explained to 20 minutes Nice public prosecutor Xavier Bonhomme.
