A man attacks the vehicle of Takeshi Kitano, the director unharmed

The perpetrator could be a tortured and violent character who often haunts Takeshi Kitano’s films. But on Saturday night the assault was very real. An individual armed with a pickaxe and a knife attacked, in Tokyo, the vehicle carrying the famous Japanese director, without injuring himself.

Takeshi Kitano was leaving the headquarters of private broadcaster TBS at around 11:40 p.m., where he had just appeared on a live broadcast, according to public broadcaster NHK.

The damaged windshield

The assailant, a man in his 40s, rushed to the filmmaker’s vehicle and started punching him with a pickaxe, damaging the windshield and other parts. He was arrested on the spot and was being questioned by police on Sunday, according to NHK, TBS and several other Japanese media.

Takeshi Kitano, 74, is known abroad for his films with a very personal aesthetic, often featuring the violent world of the yakuza, the Japanese mafia. In his country, he is also famous as a comedian and television host.
