A legionnaire died and another was injured in an accident on Thursday while they were training in the mountains in Savoy, according to the emergency services and the army. The roped party of the two soldiers was evolving at the beginning of the afternoon in the area of ​​the Pointe de Gargan (2,767 meters), in the Beaufortain massif, when a piece of snow broke off, according to the High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon. (PGHM) based in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, which opened an investigation.

The deceased victim, aged about thirty, belonged to the 2nd foreign engineer regiment, based in Saint-Christol-d’Albion (Vaucluse), and was in a roped party with a soldier from the same unit who survived, according to the 27th Mountain Infantry Brigade, to which the regiment belongs.

The human toll of mountain avalanches during the 2020-2021 season is one of the heaviest in the past 50 years, according to the National Association for the Study of Snow and Avalanches (Anena), with 39 deaths as of May 20. Heavy snowfall, followed by a warm spell, has weighed it down in recent weeks, with 17 deaths in one month if we include the death that occurred on Thursday.
