The 16-year-old teenager suspected of having fatally stabbed one of his neighbors, Mattéo, 17, in Champigny-sur-Marne (Val-de-Marne) on Tuesday, was indicted for murder on Friday. The suspect, who denied the facts alleged against him while in police custody and then remained silent before the investigating judge, was placed in pre-trial detention, said the Créteil prosecutor’s office, contacted by AFP. His lawyer, Me Raphaël Deutsch, said he “has no statement to make at the moment”.

Tuesday around 6:40 p.m., Mattéo was fatally wounded with a stab at the foot of one of the 29 buildings of his residence at Clos des Perroquets, where he has lived since he was two years old. The drama took place between two bars of apartment buildings, where the victim and a small group of neighbors used to play ball or smoke a shisha. The suspect is one of the “pals” of this group of neighbors, a friend of Mattéo’s friend, who had been attending him since college, told AFP. But according to his family, he is not “a close friend”. “I ran into him, but I never saw him at home,” assured Matteo’s mother, Cindy Hinault.

No doubt a dispute at the origin of the drama

The weapon has not yet been found by investigators from the judicial police of Val-de-Marne. The autopsy found a wound nearly 11 centimeters deep near the victim’s heart. The homicide shocked the inhabitants of this residence located about fifteen kilometers east of Paris. Several told AFP that they were disturbed by “some trafficking” but had never known an event as violent as a murder. The residence has “its small problems”, but “never dramatic” usually, had indicated the mayor of the city, Laurent Jeanne (Libres!).

In this case, the track of a dispute between two people was very quickly favored by the investigators, ruling out that of a conflict between gangs of young people. These recurring clashes between rival groups have caused the death of several adolescents in recent months in the Ile-de-France region. Conflicts between adolescents linked to social networks have recently had the same dramatic outcome.

A laugh has died out

Sportsman, Mattéo practiced ice hockey for eleven years. A high school student in pro commerce, he aspired to become a veterinary assistant. His bicultural family had made him “very open” between his Portuguese and Catholic father and his French and atheist mother, his father said. “Matteo is basic funny, but it is especially his laughter which is also funny”, also confided his friend Timéo, aged 15, who still speaks of his friend in the present tense: “when Matteo laughs, it sizzles “.

A white march in his memory is scheduled for Sunday, the family said.
