“Strengthen child labor and promote environmental destruction” – Juso boss Türmer shoots against the FDP
The FDP is damaging Germany’s reputation in the EU, says Juso boss Philipp Türmer. The “neoliberal, stubborn stubborn people” cannot behave “like a stubborn child all the time” – Chancellor Scholz must speak out.
IIn the dispute over the FDP’s rejection of the EU supply chain law, Juso boss Philipp Türmer has called for a word of power from Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). “Olaf Scholz should look deeply into the eyes of his liberal coalition partner by Friday and make it clear that the FDP cannot behave like a stubborn child in the coalition all the time,” Türmer told the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” on Wednesday.
Scholz “should not accept the FDP’s actions without comment,” but must show that he is bringing the Liberals “back into line with the coalition agreement, which expressly provides for support for the European supply chain law,” said the head of the SPD youth organization.
Instead of ensuring fair and equal competitive conditions across Europe, the FDP prefers to strengthen child labor and promote environmental destruction. Only “neoliberal stubborn stubborn people behave like that,” said Türmer.
Negotiators from the 27 EU states and the European Parliament agreed on the supply chain directive in mid-December. According to this, companies of a certain size would have to identify the negative effects of their activities on human rights and the environment and remedy the consequences. They would also be obliged to monitor compliance with environmental and social standards at partner companies in third countries.
The agreement still needs to be formally approved by the Member States and Parliament. Shortly before this vote, the FDP announced its rejection of the project last week. The Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD), who is responsible for the matter, explained that the federal government would have to abstain, which would be counted as a dissenting vote. This means that the previous majority for the law is shaky.
The FDP is damaging Germany’s reputation in the EU, said Juso boss of the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”. Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) has already prevented the end of combustion engines. Federal Justice Minister Marco Buschmann and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (both FDP) are also “now again acting out their battering ram mentality without rhyme or reason at the European level” by “terminating agreements made at the last second”.
