Gerwig and Nolan nominated for US directing awards
They delivered the films of 2023: Greta Gerwig with “Barbie”, Christopher Nolan with “Oppenheimer”. Now both are nominated for the prestigious Directors Guild of America awards.
In addition to Nolan, Greta Gerwig (“Barbie”), Giorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), Alexander Payne (“The Holdovers”) and Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) are nominated.
Since 2016, the DGA Association has also been honoring newcomers to directing. This time, five filmmakers made it into the selection with their debut works: Cord Jefferson (“American Fiction”), Manuela Martelli (“Chile ’76”), Noora Niasari (“Shayda”), AV Rockwell (“A Thousand and One”) and Celine song (“Past Lives”).
The awards are considered a barometer for the following Oscar ceremony. In 2023, the directing duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert first won the DGA Prize and then the directing Oscar for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”. The year before, New Zealand director Jane Campion achieved this with “The Power of the Dog”.
