The Rhein-Neckar Löwen suffered another setback on Saturday (December 23, 2023) at the end of the year in the handball Bundesliga. SC Magdeburg remains top of the table, and Füchse Berlin also won.
On the last matchday of the Handball Bundesliga (HBL) before the home European Championships in January, the Rhein-Neckar Löwen lost 31:32 (18:13) to TVB Stuttgart, which was threatened with relegation, despite a comfortable half-time lead. It was the club’s third defeat in a row.
Stuttgart, on the other hand, celebrated an important victory in the relegation battle. The Swabians, where Adam Lönn made a decisive contribution to the comeback with eight goals, prevented them from slipping into a relegation zone.
ThSV Eisenach also collected important points in the 28:26 (15:14) against HC Erlangen. Despite the second win in a row, the promoted team remains in second-to-last place in the table due to a poor goal difference.
Third win in a row for Wetzlar
HSG Wetzlar is also still on the rise. At Bergischer HC, coach Frank Carstens’ team won 28:23 (12:10) and climbed into the top half of the table thanks to their third success in a row. The BHC, on the other hand, continued its downward slide with its fourth defeat in a row and has the same record as Stuttgart and Eisenach (13:25 points) after 19 match days.
Magdeburg beats Göppingen and remains top of the table
SC Magdeburg will also be at the top of the table after the 19th matchday of the Handball Bundesliga. The Champions League winner won safely against FA Göppingen on Friday evening (December 22, 2023) with 31:27 (17:10).
Although the first few minutes of the game were even, the SCM was ahead by seven goals at the break. Bennet Wiegert’s team didn’t let this cushion be taken away from them. The best shooter was Icelandic Omar Ingi Magnusson, who contributed twelve goals. During the game, the Magdeburgers also announced the extension of the contract with the Danish backcourt player Michael Damgaard (until 2025).
Foxes Berlin close
The first pursuers remain the Berliner Füchse, who are only behind Magdeburg because of the worse goal difference. After a perfect first half, the capital team easily prevailed against SC DHfK Leipzig 37:28 (18:9). Lasse Andersson scored his 500th goal in the Bundesliga.
Flensburg-Handewitt narrowly wins at Balingen-Weilstetten
In the parallel game, SG Flensburg-Handewitt achieved a well-contested away win against the last team, HBW Balingen-Weilstetten, with 34:32 (18:16) and successfully defended third place in the table. Flensburg’s best thrower was Emil Jakobsen with twelve goals.
