As the British Home Office said on Friday, harmful legionella had been detected in samples from the barge’s water system. All 39 asylum seekers were taken off board as a precautionary measure – an embarrassing incident for the government, which wanted to demonstrate its new, stricter course in asylum policy by transferring them to the barge.
