Ferrets to fight against rats in the city center of Evry-Courcouronnes

Ferrets versus rats, who will win the fight? This month of March, the city of Evry-Courcouronnes is launching an extermination operation in the heart of the downtown district, where rodents are visible day and night.

In order to limit the use of chemicals, the city called on the services of the Rattila company, whose ecological methods use ferrets to reduce the proliferation of rats. “Little known, this old technique is nevertheless very effective,” said the town hall of the city in a press release. “Its use on the scale of an entire district is a first in France”.

annoying neighbors

For several weeks, the inhabitants of the city of Evry-Courcouronnes have noticed the presence of a large number of rats in the downtown district. Rodents no longer hesitate to emerge on the surface, under the gaze of passers-by. “In addition to the negative image that this presence can create, rats are likely to transmit diseases and weaken the pipes,” according to the town hall of the city. The municipality has decided to complete its regular deratization measures in buildings, by carrying out operations in public spaces.

Browsing technique

Since March 6 and until April, the company Rattila, intervenes, after a field study, on the whole of the district of the city center. It uses the technique of browsing which consists of “placing a ferret in the galleries dug by the rats to scare them away”, specified the town hall of Evry-Courcouronnes. The increase in the number of rats is due to the deposits of food waste on the ground, the poor maintenance of garbage rooms, open to the outside and the dilapidated state of the sanitation networks. The town hall of the city asked the company Rattila to carry out, alongside its technical operations, awareness-raising actions for the general public. Respecting a few simple gestures such as not feeding animals in public spaces, depositing waste in closed bins, encouraging landlords to carry out the necessary work in garbage areas, can help to reduce the rodent population in the neighborhood.
