STORY: Several organizations called for demonstrations in Munich on Saturday. In the morning there was, among other things, an event that called for more freedom and equality in Iran. And in addition, there were later demonstrations for peace and against further arms deliveries to Ukraine. In the Bayerischer Hof, at the Munich Security Conference, on the other hand, there was an open exchange of blows between the superpowers USA and China. China’s top diplomat Wang Yi accused the United States of a smear campaign and aggressive behavior against his country on Saturday. US Vice President Kamala Harris, on the other hand, warned Beijing against using weapons to support Russia in its war against Ukraine. That would only reward aggression. She renewed America’s claim to leadership and rejected isolationist considerations. The Russian attack on Ukraine also overshadowed the deliberations on the second day of the security conference. Harris accused Russia of crimes against humanity and reiterated that those responsible would be held accountable. She also assured Ukraine that she would continue to receive military support. Russia must not win, because otherwise other authoritarian states in the world could feel emboldened. Wang Yi, on the other hand, campaigned for peace negotiations in Ukraine and accused some – unnamed – states of not being interested in a peaceful solution. He announced a proposal from the Chinese leadership and called on the Europeans to also try to find a peace solution. He did not want to condemn Russia. Since the Russian invasion, Beijing has repeatedly emphasized its own neutrality. The Munich Security Conference ends on Sunday.
