Waiting for the first tweet
He’s back: Musk unblocks Donald Trump’s Twitter account – but is he even coming back?
Former US President Donald Trump was deprived of his most important mouthpiece for almost two years. Now the new Twitter boss Elon Musk has unblocked him again. And his fans hope to return.
His presidency would have been unthinkable without Twitter. Even before his election, Donald Trump used the short message service to address his supporters directly and unfiltered. With his mixture of self-praise, attacks on opponents and surprising announcements, he set the pace for the headlines during his tenure. Then he got banned. Now Elon Musk has kept his promise – and given Donald Trump his Twitter account back.
Since the early hours of the morning, visitors to the profile no longer expect the message that this person has been blocked. But the entire collection of Trump’s almost 60,000 tweets. New ones have not yet been added: In the USA it is still the middle of the night. Nevertheless, many of Trump’s fans are likely to be eagerly awaiting his return to the Twitter stage.
Waiting for Donald Trump
However, it is not yet clear whether this will happen. Twitter is now finally in sensible hands again, Trump announced in response to Elon Musk’s takeover of the service. But he would rather stay on his own platform. Almost a year after being kicked out, Trump launched his own network, Truth Social, and now uses it regularly after a slow initial phase. However, he does not even have the reach of his Twitter account there. In this respect, it remains exciting whether he sticks to his announcement.
Maybe Trump just wanted to cover himself in case he wasn’t allowed to return after all. Musk had confirmed months ago that he wanted to unlock the account. On Friday, however, he suddenly decided on a different option: he let the Twitter users vote on the return. The more than 130 million users who, according to Musk, saw the survey only narrowly decided: 52 percent wanted Trump back, 48 percent didn’t want it. “People have spoken,” Musk finally announced the result. A few hours later the account was available again.
For Trump, the end of the lockdown comes at a crucial time. He had just announced his renewed candidacy for the 2024 presidential election. With Twitter he has now regained his most important mouthpiece. But whether he can achieve the same range again remains to be seen. During his presidency, virtually every tweet he tweeted became global news. However, there was an important reason for this: the tweets were direct statements by the most powerful man in the world at the time. This will probably apply less to a challenger who has already been deselected.
