- Period: Monday, July 12th, 2021, midnight CEST – July 18th, 2021, 11:59 pm CEST
- Presentation of the flag bearer duo: Thursday, July 22, 2021, 7 a.m. CEST at the DOSB press conference in Tokyo
- Organizer: DOSB together with ARD, ZDF, Bild and Eurosport
- Procedure: The choice is twofold. On the one hand the public votes, on the other hand also the athletes of Team Germany. The votes of both groups are counted and the percentages of both groups are then added for each athlete: in. Whoever has the highest percentage of points for women and men will jointly carry the flag to the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo.
Criteria for the pre-selection of the ten nominees by the board and the presidium of the DOSB
- Success: previous international successes, especially Olympic successes
- Role model function: Popular athletes who embody a fair and manipulation-free competitive sport not only with their successes, but also with their personality and attitude.
- Diversity of sport: Selection of athletes from different sports and disciplines.
- Priority for the 2020 Olympic Games competitions: The competition program of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and the optimal, immediate preparation for it will be taken into account in coordination with athletes and coaches.
- Corona rules on site: The local corona rules have an impact on the arrival and departure of the athletes and thus also on the preselection.
