According to army chief Cirilito Sobejana, the plane had missed the runway, wanted to take off, but did not succeed, and crashed. The survivors were taken to a hospital. “We are doing our best to save the passengers,” emphasized Sobejana.

The machine was reportedly started in the capital Manila and then on its way to Jolo via Cagayan de Oro on the island of Mindanao. The accident occurred in the town of Patikul in Sulu Province. The Philippine military has been fighting the extremists of the Abu Sayyaf group in the Muslim-majority province of Sulu for decades.
