Some collect stamps, others love gardening – and Günter Pichler keeps studying. The Austrian went back to university at the age of 60 and now has 15 academic titles on his business card.

It all started with the law. At a young age, Günter Pichler studied law and did his doctorate in the subject. Many other titles were to follow the doctoral title later, because Pichler collects academic titles. The Austrian is now 81 years old and has 15 of them.

He has just acquired the degree of “Lex Legum Master” through the post-university course “Canon Law for Lawyers”. “Prof. Mag. theol., Mag. rer. soc. oec., Lic. phil., Mag. Dr. phil., Mag. Dr. phil. fac. theol., Mag. Dr. iur, Lex legum Master ( LLM), Bakk. theol., Bacc. theol., Bakk. phil., Bacc. phil.” is his salutation according to ORF now. This may seem quirky to many, but Pichler himself doesn’t see anything wrong with it: “The individual gardeners, the other collects stamps and I study.”

Back to university at the age of 60

After his first doctorate, Pichler first worked as a human resources manager and later as a teacher. After an operation, he had to give up his job due to illness. Then, at the age of 60, he was drawn back to university: Pichler enrolled in theology in Innsbruck. Many in his environment were skeptical about the decision, he reported to the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”: “My family initially thought that I was not quite right in the head.”

But Pichler even managed to convince his wife Margarethe to return to the lecture hall. Both of them commuted between their apartment in Dornbirn and the university in Innsbruck for years, later they even rented their own “student digs”. The fact that they were surrounded by fellow students who were 40 years their junior at the university did not bother them. “The boys benefited from our experience and we from their spontaneity,” says Günter Pichler. They were even invited to parties.

fun studying

The 81-year-old now has a total of four doctorates on his business card, as well as various other academic degrees. His thirst for knowledge just couldn’t be quenched: “With the food comes the appetite and it came to me, I just didn’t want to stop studying, I’ve had a lot of fun over the years,” he told ORF. It’s not about the titles themselves, but about learning. But at the age of 81, he promised his wife that it should be over.
