Loot of 95,000 euros: man buys 300 iPhones in one fell swoop – and is robbed in front of the store

Again and again there are spectacular raids in the vicinity of Apple Stores. Now a whole bag full of iPhones has been stolen from a New Yorker.

If you think about it, it’s actually almost obvious: Anyone who shops in the Apple Store usually has expensive premium products in their shopping bag – and is a correspondingly lucrative victim. Examples like Monday’s robbery should only fuel this thinking in potential criminals. Two men ambushed Apple customers in New York. And made off with loot worth 95,000 euros.

This is reported by the local radio station “1010 Wins”, citing the New York police. The buyer made a real bulk purchase. He is said to have bought 300 iPhone 13s in one fell swoop. He left the famous Apple Store on 5th Avenue in Manhattan at 1 a.m. with three large shopping bags. And was blocked after a few meters by a slowing car.

Brutal action

According to the police, two men then jumped out of the car and asked him to hand over his bags. The victim didn’t want to play along. And defended himself against the attack. The robbers then resorted to violence: they overpowered the man with a targeted punch on the nose, grabbed one of the bags and sped away in the getaway car.

It was a bitter loss for the victim: there were 125 iPhones in the bag, which the police said was worth 95,000 euros. The victim was not seriously injured, however, according to the police, the man refused medical care at the scene. According to the authorities, a search and a description of the perpetrators and the car are still pending.

Not an isolated case

The victim’s bulk iPhone purchase is less unusual than one might first think. According to the radio station, the man runs his own shop and sells the devices there. In the store he was already known for this type of bulk purchase. It is not known why he decided to go shopping at night. But that’s not a problem with the store: The store, known as the flagship for Apple design, is open around the clock.

It happens again and again that criminals target Apple Stores in spectacular actions. In 2016, thieves in San Francisco looted an entire Apple Store within 12 seconds. Also in New York, a thief simply disguised himself as an employee – and then left the store with 19 iPhones. In Germany, too, the shops were already the target of criminals: in 2014, several armed men attacked a cash transport in front of the shop on Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm. Shortly before, burglars had tried to break through the glass facade of the store with a car. This year, too, there was a breathtaking raid. In Amsterdam, a heavily armed robber took hostages in the Apple Store. He ended up being run over by a car.
