Match report3: 2! Real Madrid once again brings FC Barcelona to their knees and is the first finalist in the Supercopa de España 2022. Vinícius Júnior, Karim Benzema and Federico Valverde give the Whites their 100th victory in a Clásico in a highly exciting duel after extra time, the Catalans meanwhile equalize two deficits.
Real Madrid advance to the Supercopa final
RIAD. The fifth Clásico in a row also goes to Real Madrid. Los Blancos prevailed against FC Barcelona in Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh on Wednesday evening and in an immensely contested semi-final of the Supercopa de España after extra time a 3-2 retracted. After 45 minutes the score was 1: 1, after 90 minutes it was 2: 2.
Historically, it is Real’s 100th triumph against arch-rivals from Catalonia! This means that the Madrilenians will also move into the final of the mini-tournament, which will take place on Sunday (7.30 p.m., in REAL TOTAL-Liveticker).
Which opponent Carlo Ancelotti’s team will face there will be clarified on Thursday evening. Then Atlético Madrid and the Athletic Club from Bilbao compete in another duel in the fight for progress.
Alaba is missing for a short time – Carvajal and Nacho in defense
The Madrilenians had to do without David Alaba at short notice. The Austrian is suffering from muscular ailments and was therefore represented in central defense in front of Thibaut Courtois and alongside Éder Militão by Nacho Fernández. While Ferland Mendy occupied the left side, Daniel Carvajal was preferred to Lucas Vázquez on the right. Otherwise, the starting line-up was as expected: Luka Modrić, Casemiro and Toni Kroos played in midfield, while Marco Asensio, Karim Benzema and Vinícius Júnior formed the attack.
Real performed confidently at the King Fahd Stadium and were initially anxious to let the Catalans come in order to ultimately make quick advances themselves. In the initial phase, the Blancos came in the person of Benzema (3rd), Asensio (8th) and Vinícius (12th) and a little later Asensio (19th) to four deals, none of which sparked any great danger. Barça, on the other hand, initially acted harmlessly for a long time.
Vinícius takes the lead – an unfortunate goal conceded to make it 1-1
The logical consequence of the slight superiority of Ancelotti’s team: the lead. Benzema licked the ball from Sergio Busquets, who was mentally much too slow in midfield, then got it back from Modrić, whereupon the French captain sent the nimble Vinícius – and it wriggled in the net shortly afterwards. The Brazilian picked up the pace and converted the round leather with a left-footed shot to make it 1-0 (25th).
With the lead, however, the Merengues could not go into the break. As a result, Xavi’s ensemble improved their game and was extremely happy to equalize 1-1 a few minutes before half-time whistle (41st). Militão wanted to clear in their own penalty area, but shot at Luuk de Jong, from whom the game device jumped to the inside post and then behind the line. Previously, the Barça striker had already approached his sense of achievement with two attempts to head the ball (30./32.). The flattering equalization gave the Europa League participant tailwind, Real had to rally.
Benzema raises again for Real Madrid
While the arch-rival made two changes at the break – Pedri and Ez Abde for Frenkie de Jong and Ferrán Torres – Ancelotti left it with his starting team for the time being. The Xavi-Elf got off to a better start after the restart, developed more traction to the opposing housing. Real, on the other hand, lacked accuracy and showed too little intensity.
Things improved a little after almost an hour of play, but Real did not come close to taking the lead again. Rodrygo Goes should provide freshness in the attack, he replaced Asensio in the 68th minute. And suddenly Ancelotti’s ensemble was wide awake again! Just moments after the change, Benzema hit the left post from a half-right position with a left-footed post (69th), only to let Los Blancos cheer just three minutes later. Marc-André ter Stegen initially blocked a shot from the number 9 to the side, Carvajal brought the round leather back to the center, where Benzema increased to 2: 1 (72nd).
Shock! Real Madrid conceded another equalizer
But even this leadership could not bring Real over the time. The Barcelona substitute Ansu Fati headed the 2-2 equalizer (83rd) in the closing stages after a cross from the left side and was criminally released in the center. Since no winner was found after 90 minutes including stoppage time, it went into 30-minute extra time. To this Carvajal was replaced by Vázquez.
Valverde scores in extra time for a 3-2 win
And the two times 15 minutes ultimately decided winners and losers. The winner: Real – because Valverde made it 3-2 after a quick counterattack (98th). Casemiro drove the ball forward, served Rodrygo on the right, who finally put it in on the Uruguayan. This just had to be pushed in.
Will the final be just as dramatic? The white ballet beckons the twelfth Supercopa victory in the club’s history.
