A young legionnaire was found dead on Monday in the grounds of the Foreign Legion barracks in Nîmes (Gard), his service weapon at his side, we learned from concordant sources. Questioned by AFP, the press service of the military governor of Marseille confirmed that a legionnaire had died at the barracks of Nîmes at midday, without giving more details, after initial information from the Objectif Gard site.
A 19-year-old soldier
The soldier was 19 years old and had joined the Legion a few months ago, according to a source familiar with the investigation. He died of a gunshot and his service weapon was found near his body, in the small guard room near the entrance gate of the barracks where he was on duty, said this source.
At this stage, no clue suggests the intervention of a third party in the death of the young man, but the investigation, entrusted to the gendarmerie, will have to determine the exact circumstances, added the same source.
